The taste of Bihar

The chivda Bihar actually eats

Every Bihari home keeps a tin of chura. Not the thick poha you soak for breakfast — the thin, papery kind that crisps in a hot kadhai and gets tossed with groundnuts, curry leaf and a green chilli that has just begun to blister. That tin is what this pouch is.

Savita Kitchen’s Chura Chivda is made the way Savita Devi has made it for thirty years: flattened rice and corn flakes crisped in mustard oil, hand-sorted groundnuts, onion, turmeric and a little red chilli. Ten ingredients, and you can name all ten. No palm oil, no preservatives, no artificial colour, and no factory line — just small weekly batches, sealed the same week they are made.

It is light, savoury and properly crisp rather than heavy and greasy, which is why it works with morning chai, at four o’clock when the day sags, and in a bowl on the table the moment someone rings the bell.

Why our chura chivda tastes different

01

Mustard oil, never palm oil

Mustard oil is what gives Bihari chivda its sharp, warm finish. It costs several times more than the palm oil most packaged namkeen is made in — and it is the single biggest reason this tastes like home rather than like a factory.

02

Hand-sorted groundnuts

Every peanut is picked over by hand before it goes in, so you get whole, red-skinned groundnuts through the pouch instead of split halves and dust at the bottom.

03

Sealed at peak crispness

Oxygen is flushed out before sealing, so the oil never turns and the flakes never go soft. It reaches you the way it left the kitchen — crisp to the last flake.

Frequently asked questions

What is chura chivda?

Chura chivda is a savoury Indian namkeen made from flattened rice — called chura in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, and poha or chiwda elsewhere — crisped with groundnuts, curry leaf, green chilli and turmeric. It is the everyday tea-time snack of Bihari homes.

Which pack should I order — 250 g or 500 g?

Order 250 g if you are trying Savita Kitchen for the first time or eating it alone. Order 500 g if it is for a family, an office pantry or festive gifting — it works out cheaper per gram and it is the size most people move to on their second order.

Does it contain palm oil or preservatives?

No. It is made in mustard oil, with no preservatives, no artificial colours and no added sugar. The pouch is nitrogen-flushed instead, which is what keeps it fresh without chemicals.

How spicy is it?

Mild to medium. There is warmth from green chilli and a little red chilli, but it is a chivda meant to be eaten by the handful with chai, not a hot mixture.

Does it contain peanuts?

Yes — groundnut (peanut) makes up 14% of the mix. It is also made in a kitchen that handles tree nuts, sesame and cereals containing gluten, so please avoid it if you have any of those allergies.

How long will it stay crisp after opening?

About a week if you reseal the zip-lock properly and keep it away from moisture. Unopened, it is best before 6 months from the manufacturing date on the pouch.

Where do you ship, and is cash on delivery available?

We ship across India from our kitchen in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, and cash on delivery is available. Orders are packed from the freshest batch and handed to the courier within 24 hours.
